Overview of Water-Wet and Oil-Wet Oil sands

Oil sands are rocks consisting of a mixture of sand, clay, water, and natural bitumen — a thick, viscous form of oil. These rocks represent one of the largest sources of hydrocarbons on the planet. 

Depending on their composition, such rocks are divided into two types: water-wet rocks, where bitumen is separated from the mineral part by a water layer, and oil-wet rocks, where bitumen has penetrated the mineral structure, making its separation extremely challenging.

Water-wet bituminous rocks are mixtures of sand, clay, water, and bitumen. In these rocks, bitumen is located on the surface of sand particles, separated from them by a layer of water. This natural separation simplifies bitumen extraction, as water prevents direct adhesion of bitumen to mineral particles.

Oil-wet bituminous rocks are much more difficult to process. In these rocks, bitumen deeply penetrates the structure of the sand, strongly adhering to mineral particles. Separation requires complex chemical and physical processes.

Drilling and Rock Extraction:

    • Is completely safe for the environment.
